Why do I have slow FTP download speeds?

This article can help you out if you experience slow downloading speeds from your Seedbox using FTP.

Clearly, maximized FTP speed is ideal while using your service.

Before checking configurations let's check next things:

  1. Try to check speed via VPN.

If your ISP has TCP based throttling you can try connecting to your seedbox using your seedbox built-in WireGuard.

The following guide will help to install WireGuard:

  2. Check internet speed to our server.

If you have Lean plan:

If you have Premium boxes:

Install Librespeed for checking. (you can do it from One-click app)

FTP speed can't be faster that Download speed that you will see.

Possible reasons

Slow FTP transfer speeds can be influenced by a variety of factors, such as:

  • Throttling or limitations from your Internet Service Provider, or an inherently slow internet connection on your end.

  • Unstable wireless connections or issues with your wireless adapter.

  • Misconfigured settings within your FTP server or client.

  • Heavy usage on the shared server hosting your seedbox, leads to high bandwidth consumption.

Each of these elements can contribute to reduced transfer rates, and often a combination of these factors is at play.

💡 Note

Running multiple resource-intensive tasks concurrently on your seedbox — such as numerous active torrents, multiple torrent clients, syncing folders during active downloads, FTP transfers, and streaming — can affect its performance. Engaging in several of these activities simultaneously can lead to high Input/Output (I/O) demand, which, in turn, can significantly decrease your speed due to elevated I/O operations per second (IOPS).

To mitigate this, consider limiting the number of active torrents and adjusting the bandwidth settings in your torrent client. For improved download and upload speeds, you might want to use SFTP over port 2222 (Basic/Swift/Supreme product users, the port can be found next to the SFTP, e.g 63526)

We also suggest running FileZilla through a remote desktop connection for your seedbox to optimize performance. Additionally, increasing the Timeout setting in FileZilla to 0 seconds (disabling) could help prevent connection timeouts.
